Overweight girls more likely to have acne

A new study from Norway shows that teenage girls who are overweight or obese are more likely to have acne problems than their peers. Wow, that’s a double whammy that could topple just about anyone’s self-esteem in today’s image-obsessed society.

The big question, though, is why this happens. There are several possible answers.

For one, it’s possible that overweight teenage girls don’t actually have more acne problems than their peers, but rather that they think they have more acne. Being overweight could cause them to have self-esteem issues that makes it easier for them to look in the mirror and feel disgusted by a breakout that wouldn’t seem like such a big deal to girls with healthier self-esteems,

Then again, there could be a physical link between acne and being overweight, especially for females. Some researchers posit that being overweight causes girls to experience larger amounts of androgen, which could contribute to acne breakouts. If this is the case, then teenage boys obviously do not experience the same burst of androgen, otherwise the connection would exist for them as well.

This research is important in that it reveals some of the underlying causes of acne in teenage girls. More importantly, though, it shows that doctors could soon have a new understanding of diet, exercise, acne, and self-esteem that helps them treat the issues that are most important to young women. After all, this is a group of people that have fairly high rates of mental health problems and suicides. Learning more about these connections, therefore, could help health professionals treat teenagers in a more holistic manner that addresses their mental and physical health needs.
